Hi ladies! Thank you so much for your interest. To mail items to the Misawa girl scouts use the following address:

Misawa Girl Scouts
attn: Jessica Payne
Unit 5027
APO, AP 96319

You will need to fill out a customs form at the post office. Thanks again and please spread the word!

P.S. I forgot to mention that the USPS is the best option when mailing to an APO address. UPS and Fed Ex will just turn around and ship it thru the postal service because they cannot deliver to an APO. An APO address is a US address in a different country it's basically like having a PO box.

Hello,

My daughter used to be in in your troop when we were stationed in Misawa. We'd like to help with your project, and I was wondering how long you are going to be doing this (since it sometimes takes a while for packages to be shipped from stateside)?

Thank you,

Masako, we will be collecting until May 15th, try to mail at least two weeks prior. However, if packages should arrive after that date we will still pass it along. Thank you so much for your interest.

My daughter (Jacquelyn Cody) and her family are at Misawa Air Base (my son in law is Navy Air) and she added your message to her facebook page. My company, PrimaCare Medical Centers (urgent care clinics in the Dallas area) will be collecting company wide. Our deadline is 04/22/11. Will I need to ship all by priority in order to get the shipment to you on time?
Thank you,

Joan, I have just sent you an email to your gmail account. I am a troop leader in North Carolina and I am hoping to get our Council involved in this project. I know my Brownie Troop will be helping out as much as we can. A great way to really "be a sister to every Girl Scout".

Thank-you so much,

Gabriele, I believe the only thing that would need to be added to the above address is the city:Misawa and the prefecture:Aomori.However let me check into that to confirm. If all else fails, I will be happy to provide you with my Japanese home address. Thank you for wishing to help!

Wynne, first of all, WOW! Thank you so much for involving your entire company. Priority mail usually arrives in Misawa within a week, with regular mail the post office will tell you it can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks. That said, we usually get our packages between 2-3 weeks. Your deadline should be fine for it to arrive on time either way you choose. If you do send it regular mail, though can I suggest you make the recipient:
Jessica Payne, instead of Misawa Girl Scouts. Also mark the customs form as gifts, instead of donations. We are being told right now that due to the large amount of packages coming in to Japan at this time anything marked "donations" is being held longer by customs.

Victoria, another great BIG THANK YOU, to you as well. If you e-mailed the gmail account you actually e-mailed Jessica Payne, our service unit director. She will be able to answer any questions you might have, so that is okay. And if you called her Joan on the e-mail, that is okay too because Joan is a much cooler name anyways! ;)

I did not realize that we had this step up on the site. Awesome.

The Misawa GS does not have a Japanese address that we can use, but we can use one of our own Japanese address. I don't know mine off hand really. :(
Thanks so much Joan for all your hard work with this. :)

Jessica,
My family was motivated to help out. My brother is the CO of a destroyer that was taking part in the rescue and recovery up along the northern coast of Japan. There are 10 boxes on the way to you. Each box contains 1 backpack filled with most of the items that you requested. I attached a sheet to each pack that list the contents.
I had all my customs forms filled out before I got to the post office, but the postal worker was not too happy to see me.
I hope your backpack drive is successful.

Operation Backpacks for Japan - Kids Helping Kids

The Misawa Girl Scouts:
are organizing the collection and assembling of comfort backpacks. Our mission is to provide comfort and a message of love to the kids of Japan who have lost everything in the recent earthquake and tsunami. We will distribute the packs after transportation and mail delivery becomes available in the affected areas.

We will include a short note letting our Japanese friends know about all the people involved and where the donations originated.--Upd

Here are some ideas on how your Family, Unit, Troop, Den, Group can help:

* Donate only Backpacks--You do not have to send filled backpacks.
* Donate items for the packs.
* Send cards to place inside the packs.
* Spread the news about our project!

Collection for the backpacks:

Those at Misawa can email operationbp.misawags@yahoo.com for pickup, or bring by tower 117 on Main base on Thursdays 4-5pm to GS hut on main floor. Or you can email Jessica at Jpayne.girlscout@gmail.com or call 616-8405

Those in the states or outside of Japan can send items to:

Misawa Girl Scouts
Unit 5027
APO, AP 96319

Questions can be sent to:

JPayne.GirlScouts@gmail.com

We will be collecting packs & items until further notice.

Backpacks can be gently used as well. Try taking a look at your local Thrift Store for some great deals.

Items that we are collecting to put in the backpacks:

* paper, pen, crayons and pencils.
* small paper pads
* Small (not broken please) Fast food toys.

* coloring books
* flashlights w/ batteries
* stuffed animals
* playing cards
* comics, childrens magazine, small books- American books are okay.
* non-perishable snacks
* hand held games
* hats
* small blankets
* small stuff animal/ Can be gently used or washed please
* toothpaste/brush
* travel size lotion
* chapstick
* hairbrush/comb
* small travel tissue packs

Please no clothes and provide extra batteries for electronic items.
Please indicate whether your backpack is for a girl, boy, or either sex.

Also indicate the general age.

The backpacks can be a clean, used backpack or a new one.

The backpack should be something you would want to receive!

Not at Misawa? Not able to purchase items and/or backpacks?

A idea I shared with another troop was if they could raise money and you can go on Oriental Trading and they have back sacks and pencils, paper and other American trinkets that Japanese children like plus normally with a $50.00 purchase you can ship free... and you can have it shipped to our address. Just an idea... of ways to save on shipping. . Please know that just wanting to help means so much to me and our troops here. :)Once again thank you so much for your interest to help.

Once again thank you so much for helping our girls with this project.

I am so excited to find your blog! I lived in Misawa from 1975-1978 when my Dad was stationed there. My friends and I are raising money for Japan and wanted to donate in a more tangible way in addition to sending money to the Red Cross. We are artists and like so many in our field want to contribute to help our friends in Japan. Will pass this information on to help you with this most worthy cause.

Thank you ladies! Either address is fine we will get them all. Sorry for the confusion. One is the Girl Scout hut addrress:
Unit 5027
APO, AP 96319

the other address belongs to our unit director who graciuosly allowed her unit box to be used when the post office put a hold on mail to official addresses due to an overabundance of mail. At the time personal mail was not being held.
PSC 76, Box 8302
APO, AP 96319

However, mail is now flowing fine so we put back the official address up there. Thank you ladies, for the boxes. Oh and please forgive the late response.

Kathy, I am very sorry for the returned package! I edited an update for that today under a blog dated on the 20th of May. Unfortunately the post office is not willing to work with us either. There is an international address posted which should not have packages returned from, but since it is an international address there may be extra charges added. See if the post office will only charge the difference already paid. If it is not outrageous of course. If it is then please look into donating the package locally to someone in in need in your community. We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
